Yes on 2 Announces Rep. Andy Vargas as Honorary Co-chair of Campaign for RCV

For Immediate Release

Boston, Mass. – September 25, 2020 –  The ‘Yes on 2’ campaign announced today that State Representative Andy Vargas (D – 3rd Essex) will be an honorary co-chair. Earlier this legislative session, the Haverhill representative filed  House Bill 719 to enact Ranked Choice Voting along with fellow campaign co-chair Rep. Adrian Madaro.

“Voting Yes on 2 is about building a stronger democracy that puts power in the hands of the people.,” said Rep. Andy Vargas. “This question can be boiled down to a very simple principle — that candidates that win elections should win with more than 50% of voters supporting them. In the absence of RCV, we sideline majority rule and enable minority and special interest rule. A simple change to the way we vote can bring so many benefits to Massachusetts voters; RCV would increase diversity in government, decrease polarization in campaigns, and help restore faith in our democracy in a time when we need it most. I’ll be voting “Yes” on Question 2 to give voters the voice and representation they deserve.”

With the addition of Vargas, ‘Yes on 2’ Honorary Co-Chairs are as follows:

Deval Patrick, 71st Governor of Massachusetts and Founder and Chairman of TogetherFUND

Bill Weld, 68th Governor of Massachusetts

Kerry Murphy Healey, 70th Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts and President of the Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream

Danielle Allen, James Bryant Conant University Professor at Harvard University, and Director of Harvard’s Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics

Adrian Madaro, Representative for the 1st Suffolk District in the Massachusetts House of Representatives

Jesse Mermell, Former 4th Congressional District candidate and former Brookline Select Board Member

Steve Pagliuca, Co-Chairman of Bain Capital and Managing Partner of the Boston Celtics

Tanisha M. Sullivan, President of the NAACP Boston Branch

Lawrence H. Summers, Charles W. Eliot University Professor, President Emeritus at Harvard University and former United States Treasury Secretary
